Mr. Rowley Us History 1. Explain the reasons the artist featured a farmer under a banner with the dates 1776 and 1876.
2. Which of the images surrounding the farmer have the respect of the artist? Which occupations are being criticized? Explain your selection(s).
3. Describe conditions in the country in the 1870s that led to the formation of organizations such as the Grange.
1- This slide shows the base railroads in 1870 and the ones being built through 1890. In 1870 there is only one major railroad that leads out west and a little more in the east. The railroads that were built between 1870 and 1890 go through major cities as well. 2- Shows different states that are republican and democrat (two different political parties). The east coast was mainly democratic where as the south and west were republican. There were more states overall that were democratic in the election of 1884. 3- A chart showing the amount of iron and steel production in 1870-1900. Chart fluctuates through out the years but overall increases to around 10,000 tons of iron and steel by 1900. It increases slightly for around 15 years then starts to climb up hill fast from 85’ to 00’. 4- The Vanderbilt Mansion is very different from architecture we have today. This is a more old Greek style of a building. That is due to the way the pillars are on the building and the little designs that are incorporated on to the building and it being built out of marble making it quite expensive. 5- Looks likes this room took a lot of money and time to build. It looks like it might be a very important room in the house, a place that signifies wealth and power. 6- This is a very old picture of a woman who goes by the name of Alva Vanderbilt holding some doves. She looks very wealthy. 7- The picture seems to have a lot of meaning behind it. At first glance you see a very big man with the name “ROCKEFELLER” on his collar who has the White House tipped over with people under it. The Rockefeller family was extremely wealthy at the time due to the oil business which they dominated (hence the smoke stacks off the building in the background). But it was thought they used that money to manipulate politicians and people in general with there enemies amount of money. 8- This slide is captioned with “Woman's Holy War”. It shows woman on the backs of horses fighting off what appears to be barrels of alcohol, holding up signs that say “In the name of god and humanity” and “Temperance league”. Seems to be something about woman fighting for something they want to change. 9- A baby seems to be crying “I want my pa” while being held away from a man who may be its father who clearly doesn’t want it. This is my first blog. I have no idea what we have to do but I am looking forward to this class. Thank you.
